Guardian live chat: to leave or not to leave academia?

If you are considering an academic career after your PhD then you may want to join the Guardian Live Chat tomorrow, Friday 21 June from 12 – 2 pm.  The discussion is called ‘Postdoc dilemma: to leave or not to leave academia?’ and will give you an opportunity to hear from people further along in their academic career and to consider what challenges you may face as you progress your career.  The participants will be discussing:yes or no

  • Postdoc support
  • Alternative career options
  • Making the right choice
  • Role of the university
  • Challenges of staying in/leaving academia

Participants will be joined by an expert panel who will be able to give informed opinions and advice on the questions raised.  The panel includes a colleague of mine on the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) Research Staff Task Group, Dr. Sarah Blackford.  Sarah is the Head of Education and Public Affairs at the Society of Experimental Biology and is a qualified  careers adviser who regularly provides career development support to the scientific community so she will have valuable advice to share.  It’s not just for scientists though so please do check in whatever discipline you are from.  If you are not available to join the live chat you can read the discussion afterwards.

To see the discussion so far and join the chat go to the Guardian Higher Education  Network.
