PhD Intern – Distance Education Project

Job Purpose

The purpose of this internship is to participate in and support a task group set up under the auspices of the Senatus Learning and Teaching Committee, to look after the long term success of online distance education at the University of Edinburgh.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Accompany the Convenor of the Distance Education Task Group to meetings to participate in task group meetings, sharing their own experiences as a student, and having elicited those of Edinburgh distance learners where possible, to represent the student experience of PG distance learners (35%)
  2. Liaise with task group members, and assist in collating high-level data related to the provision and student experience of distance education, e.g. numbers of students, student profile, graduation rates (15%)
  3. Analyse data and apply reasoning skills (using skills gained from their current PhD studies), in order to identify trends and profiles in the University’s provision of distance education (25%)
  4. Produce written reports and materials to enable the task group to complete its deliverables, and disseminate to the wider learning and teaching community (25%)

Person Specification

Essential

  • Current PhD student at the University of Edinburgh
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong written skills with the ability to produce high quality written reports
  • Proactive and motivated approach to delivering work independently but under the direction of others
  • Excellent eye for detail and high level of accuracy
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Numerical skills

Desirable

  • Current experience as a distance learner at Edinburgh or previous experience of other courses out with Edinburgh
  • An interest in online learning and educational research methods
  • Experience with Excel and/or databases

Employment Type:  Part-time (6 hours/week)

Grade/Pay Scale:  Ue05

Commences:  November 2014
