International PhD students – new visa regulations

GlobeThe Home Office announced last month that from 6 April 2013 there will be some changes to the immigration regulations governing right to work in the UK.  One of these changes brings good news for PhD students originally from outside the EU.

Tier 4 visas will now allow completing PhD students to stay in the UK for one year beyond the end of their course to find skilled work or to set up as an entrepreneur.  You’ll eventually find more details on the UKBA website but essentially this gives you more time for your job search once you finish your PhD.

If you want to stay in the UK to work after your PhD then it’s still a good idea to start your job search as early as possible, preferably before you submit your thesis!  This will give you time to find suitable opportunities, make applications and, hopefully, attend interviews.  But at least you now have the option of continuing this job search beyond the end of your course to give you a better chance of finding the job you want.
